Top 5 fall road trips from Denver, Colorado

Anyone else love the changing colors of fall as much as I do? Get the most out of your fall by taking a road trip and see all the beautiful trees change colors, don’t forget to enjoy the drive through the mountains. Here are my top 5 road trips to take from Denver!

#1 Aspen Snowmass Colorado

Length of time: 2-3 days

Best for: hiking, views, charming downtown, aspen trees

Aspen, Colorado is best known for it’s beautiful Aspen trees and let me tell you they are a sight to see. Especially in the fall! Their leaves turn a magnificent yellow and contrast beautifully against their white trunk. If you’re a hiker, don’t forget to checkout the Maroon Bells, they are one of the most photographed landmarks in the USA! Click here for my ultimate guide to Aspen!

#2 Breckenridge Colorado

Length of time: 1-2 days

Best for: hiking, bike trails, mountain town charm

Breck is best known for it’s ski resort in the winter, but I love it most in the fall. The hiking in Breckenridge is out of this world and if you’re not a hiker, you can rent bikes in the downtown. Grab some grub at Downstairs at Eric’s and then stroll the beautiful streets of downtown Breckenridge. There is some great shopping down there and I have seen a moose in the downtown square once or twice at dusk!

#3 Estes Park Colorado

Length of time: 1-2 days

Best for: Rocky Mountain NP, wildlife, breath taking views

Four words: Rocky. Mountain. National. Park. If you haven’t been, add it to your list right now. Did you add it? This is my favorite National Park because it is huge and there is so much to explore in it. There are so many lakes to discover and trails to hike. I’ve visited this National Park 5 times and I haven’t even scratched the surface of seeing it all. It is also a great place to camp at if you’re a camper!

There is more to Estes Park Colorado than RMNP, the downtown is charming and full of amazing restaurants and shopping. Make sure to checkout the downtown on your way in or out of RMNP!

#4 Dillon Colorado

Length of time: 2-3 days

Best for: lake days, camping, hiking, biking

If you love the outdoors and the water, Dillon Colorado is for you! The Dillon Reservoir is the perfect place to kayak, hike, and bike! There are some great paths along the reservoir to explore. We camped right on the Reservoir in White River National Forest and the campsite was beautiful and lively. We can’t wait to go back and explore more of the town of Dillon. Click here to read about our camping trip to Dillon!

#5 Golden Colorado

Length of time: day trip!

Best for: Coors brewery, hiking, shopping, small town charm

Golden is the perfect example of a town to explore for a day trip. If you’re a beer lover, the Coors Brewery tour is a lot of fun. There is a ton of shopping and the cutest little boutiques to explore on the main street of downtown. You can even walk along the river that goes through the heart of downtown. If you have a free Saturday, take a few hours and grab coffee or gelato and explore this charming little town. Click here for all of my recommendations and fun stuff to do in Golden!

I hope you take a road trip this fall and find the changing colors and hidden gems of this beautiful state. Happy travels!
